Overview

UFV Zoom is available at no cost to faculty, staff, and students. Zoom is a videoconferencing service that enables real-time collaboration between individuals and groups.

Features include:

  • Video and/or audio meetings by computer or phone
  • Screen sharing with annotation
  • Virtual whiteboard and other collaboration tools
  • Integration with Outlook

Who can use it?

  • Faculty
  • Staff
  • Students

Recommended for:

  • Meetings < 250 participants
  • Virtual activities that encourage interactions among participants
  • Classes involving group discussions, e.g. tutorials

Please Note Only UFV students taking courses in the current semester are eligible for a Zoom account.

 

UFV Zoom Account Features

At UFV your Zoom account will have the following features unlocked. These features are meant to promote the safety and security of all Zoom meetings being held at the University. Please see our Zoom - Privacy & Security page for more information.

Technical Requirements for Zoom

  • Desktop requirements:
    • Zoom desktop application or via browser (with limited functionality)
  • Operating systems:
    • Windows 7, 8, 10, 11 (S Mode is not supported), Ubuntu 12.04 or higher, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.0 or higher, macOS X with macOS 10.11 or later
  • Compatible with the following browsers:
    • ChromeWithin 2 versions of current version
    • FirefoxWithin 2 versions of current version
    • EdgeWithin 2 versions of current version
    • SafariWithin 2 versions of current version
      • As an example, if the current version of Chrome is 124, then Zoom supports versions 122, 123, and 124. As new versions are released, the minimum version will also follow behind by 2 versions
  • Mobile requirements:
    • Zoom is available to use on iOS and Android devices. All UFV users need to sign in with UFV Single Sign-On (SSO).
  • Plug-ins:
    • The Outlook Plug-in is available for Zoom and requires the installation of the Zoom desktop application, a UFV Zoom account, and Microsoft Office 2016 or 2019.  At this time all other plug-ins are prohibited to ensure security.

Workshops

The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) offers workshops on how to use Zoom as a tool for effective remote instruction. TLC will demonstrate features in Zoom that can be leveraged for teaching and learning, as well as highlight best practices for synchronous instruction.
