MFA Registration

UFV students and employees are required to register for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). You can choose to register a passkey (recommended), an Authenticator app, or a physical security key (no phone required).

After you are registered for MFA, you can use Microsoft self-service password reset (SSPR) to reset your UFV account password.

How to register

1. Go to aka.ms/mfasetup.
2. Sign in with your UFV email address.

3. If you see "Your organization needs more information", click Next. If you don't see this, click +Add sign-in method.
4. Choose a MFA method from the drop down list. Details for each method can be found below.

Use a Passkey (recommended)

Passkeys let you sign in with a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition. You can save your passkey to your device (no app required), to a password manager (if it supports it), or to the Microsoft Authenticator app.

  1. Go to aka.ms/mfasetup.
  2. Click +Add sign-in method.
  3. Select a passkey option:
    1. Passkey: your passkey can be saved to your device or to a password manager
    2. Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator: your passkey can be saved to the Microsoft Authenticator app (get it for Android: Google Play store or for iOS: App store)
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to set up your desired passkey.

Note: Depending on your device, configuration steps may be different. Follow the instructions provided by your device or app to complete the setup. UFV can provide support for passkeys saved to the Microsoft Authenticator app. For other locations, support from the IT Service Desk is provided at best-effort only.

Use Microsoft Authenticator

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device (get it for Android: Google Play store or for iOS: App store)

  3. Select Microsoft Authenticator - Approve sign in requests or use one-time codes
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete registration.

Use a different authenticator app

These may include Duo, Google Auth, or Twilio Authy, etc.:

  1. Install the desired app on your device
  2. Go to aka.ms/mfasetup and click +Add sign-in method.
  3. Select Microsoft Authenticator - Approve sign in requests or use one-time codes
  4. On the Microsoft Authenticator setup screen, click: Set up a different authentication app.
  5. Use your app to scan the QR code provided.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete registration.
    • Note: Depending on the app, additional configuration options may appear. Follow the instructions provided by your app to complete the setup. UFV can provide support for the Microsoft Authenticator app. For other apps, support from the IT Service Desk is provided at best-effort only.

Use a Security Key (USB)

A security key plugs into a USB port on your computer, and can be used to verify multi-factor authentication (MFA) or as passwordless sign in. They are recommended if you do not have a mobile device or do not want to use your mobile device.

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device
  2. Go to aka.ms/mfasetup
    • If you see the prompt Your organization needs more information, click Next to register.
    • If you do not see a prompt, click +Add sign-in method.
  3. Select Passkey
  4. Select Security Key as a location when prompted to save the passkey
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to register your security key.
