Wi-Fi for Guests and Events

Overview

This service is used to request Wi-Fi access on campus for UFV guests and events. The Service Desk will create temporary Wi-Fi accounts for Eduroam for anyone who does not have an Eduroam account (provided by UFV or any other institution). Wi-Fi access will be automatically available for guests who are visiting from other higher education institutions and are already on the Eduroam network.

There are three different options for wireless access to best meet the needs of you and your guests or event:

Guest Account - Generic

This option is for when a small group of guests are expected on campus but names and contact information are unknown. The requester can request up to 50 generic guest accounts per ticket and a generic login and password will be created for each guest to use to access Wi-Fi for up to a maximum of 180 days (6 months). This option can also be selected if you require a generic login and password for when guests are unexpectedly on campus and require Wi-Fi.  We suggest departments have 1-2 generic accounts active and ready to distribute as needed.

The requester will receive the generic account(s) from the Service Desk and will be responsible for distributing the information accordingly.

Guest Account - Named

This option is for when a group of guests are expected on campus and names and contact information are known in advance. A specific login and password will be created for each guest and details will be sent directly to the guest by their preferred notification mode (SMS-text or email) to access Wi-Fi to a maximum of 180 days (6 months). This would be the best option for external groups that meet on campus monthly.

For access for more than 5 guest named accounts, the Service Desk will follow-up after your request has been received and send a spreadsheet to be filled out by the requester with the names and contact information of each guest.

Event

This option is used when a group of guests are expected on campus for 5 days or less and names and contact information are unknown. Event attendees will text-SMS a keyword to a specific number provided to receive login credentials and instructions as an SMS reply. This is a simple option for conferences, workshops, and community events on campus.

The requester will receive an auto-generated poster (PDF) that includes the event wireless information.
