Instructions on Making International and Domestic Calls

This article provides instructions on how to make International and Domestic calls on UFV phone systems. It's worth noting that by default, UFV phone system users are not able to dial International numbers. For those who require this capability, an Authorized Contact, such as a Decision Maker or Supervisor, can submit a request for access to the Telephone Support team. When making this request, it's necessary to provide the names and phone numbers of the users who will be allowed to make International calls.

To place a call to a different province or country, use the following steps when in "On-Hook" dialing mode:

  1. Dial the outbound dial digit which is 9. (If using a softphone, this step can be omitted)
  2. Dial 011 which is the international access code.
  3. Dial the desired country code, followed by the local number.
  4. To connect the call, users have multiple options, they can
    1. Lift the handset
    2. Press an inactive line button
    3. Press the speaker button
    4. Press the headset button (if a headset is attached)
    5. Press the Dial soft key (if displayed)

Examples:

  • To call Stanford University in California, USA (650-723-2300): 9 + 011 + 1 + 6507232300
  • To call University of Toronto, Canada (416-978-2011): 9 + 1 + 4169782011
  • To call Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC (250-828-5000): 9 + 1 + 2508285000
  • To call University of British Columbia (604-822-2211): 9 + 6048222211

It's important to note that if you are using a softphone, you must exclude the 9 before dialing the code. Additionally, some countries have city codes that have to be dialed after the country code and before the local number.
