If you receive a suspicious email, or if you aren't sure if what you received is legitimate, you can report the email directly from Outlook.
How to report suspicious email
Report the email
- Use the built-in Report Message button in Outlook desktop or Outlook on the web:

- Choose an option:
- Junk: Report the email as junk, spam, or unwanted bulk email (newsletters, cold calls, and unwanted solicitations).
- Phishing: Report the email as a phishing scam (the email is asking you to click a link, pay money, or provide personal information).
- Not Junk: Use this option to report something in your Junk folder that shouldn't be classified as junk. This will add the contact to your Safe Senders list, and they won't be sent to Junk again.
If you don't use Outlook, or you would like to request a manual review, forward the email directly to phishreport@ufv.ca.
Receive a verdict
Following your submission, the email will be analysed and you will receive an email with one of the following verdicts:
- Junk: The email was found to be junk. Our filters will be updated to block similar messages in the future.
- Phishing: The email was found to be phishing. Our filters will be updated to block similar messages in the future.
- No threats found: This means that the automated system was unable to find any threats. It does not mean that the email is surely safe. If you're still not sure, forward it to phishreport@ufv.ca and an analyst will manually review your submission.
Why report suspicious email?
There are several ways that reporting suspicious emails helps both you and the UFV community:
- Reporting spam and phishing helps train email filters so they can better catch malicious email in the future.
- Reporting unusual email helps the Cybersecurity team to identify the latest email threats and trends.
- If you received a spam or phishing email, chances are that others also received it. By reporting it before you delete it, we can proactively remove all copies of the malicious email.
- If you have a question about an email you received, the Cybersecurity team can investigate and we will do our best to answer it.
