Overview

This article goes over the setup process for a new UFV iPhone.

 

Setup Process

Part 1: Complete an iCloud Backup or Sync Data to iCloud

If your new UFV iPhone is the first UFV iPhone you have received or if data transfer is not required, please start at Part 2.

You will need to be signed into an Apple Account to do an iCloud backup or to sync data to iCloud. If you don't already have an Apple Account, consult the Apple Article How to create a new Apple Account for information on how to set one up.

If you'd like to do a full backup of your phone, proceed with the Complete an iCloud Backup directions below. If you'd just like to capture and sync specific built-in app data like contacts, passwords, etc, please see the Sync Data to iCloud subsection. 

Complete an iCloud Backup 

  1. On your existing phone, go to Settings and click on your name. 

  2. On the Apple Account screen, click iCloud.


  3. On the iCloud screen, select iCloud Backup 


  4. On the the iCloud Backup screen, click Back Up Now. Stay connected to your Wi-Fi network until the process ends. Under Back Up Now, the date and time of your last backup is shown.


  5. If you don't have enough iCloud storage space available to complete the backup, you may need to consider purchasing more storage space. Alternatively, you can use the directions below to sync some of your data to iCloud.

With your current device:

  1. Sync current device using Apple ID.

    To ensure your Photos, text, calendar, notes, etc. are set to sync to iCloud (verify data sync to iCloud):

    You can use a web browser to access iCloud at www.icloud.com

  2. Once you’ve navigated to the site, sign in with your Apple ID. 
  3. Once logged in, you will be taken to your iCloud dashboard. 

  4. You can check the status of your iCloud storage by clicking on the waffle (group of squares) at the top right-hand side of the page. 

  5. Next, under More, click on Your iCloud Storage

  6. You will then be brought to the following page which will give you a summary of how your iCloud storage is being used: 

  7. To check what Apps are using iCloud on your iPhone, open the Settings app (gear icon).

  8. Next, click on your Apple Account.


  9. Click on iCloud.

  10. Here, you will be shown a summary of your storage usage.

  11. Under Saved to iCloud, click on See All.

  12. Here, ensure that the apps with data you’d like to backup are set to On/toggled On.

 

Part 2: Setup of New Device

On your new device:

  1. Turn the phone on using the button on the right-hand side of the phone.
     
  2. Swipe up to open.
     
  3. Select your preferred language.
     
  4. Select Your Country or Region.

  5. On the Appearance page, one is prompted: "Choose how you would like text and icons to look on iPhone." Using the slider, select either Default, Medium, or Large and then click Continue.

  6. On the Quick Start page, click on Set Up Without Another Device.



  7. On Choose a Wi-Fi Network, select the Wi-Fi network you’d like to connect to. If on campus, select eduroam.
  8. For username, enter your UFV email address.

  9. Enter your UFV password.

  10. Click Join.

  11. If connecting to Eduroam, you will be prompted to trust idp-rad.ufv.ca Certificate. Click Trust.

  12. Your phone will now be activated. “It may take a few minutes to activate your iPhone.” message appears on the screen.

  13. Under Transfer Your Apps & Data, select either Don't Transfer Anything or From iCloud backup.

  14. If you selected the Don't Transfer Anything option, skip to step 26.

  15. If you selected the From iCloud Backup option, continue as below.

  16. Sign in with your Apple Account.

  17. You will be prompted to authenticate the Apple Account sign-in on your existing phone. An Apple Account verification code will be shown on the existing phone’s screen. Enter this code on your new phone when prompted.

  18. Read the Terms and Conditions page. Click Agree to accept.

  19. Next, choose the backup you would like to restore from.

  20. Next, the Make This Your New iPhone page shows a summary of what will be transferred - click Continue or Customize.

  21. Under Location Services, choose either Enable Location Services or Disable Location Services.

  22. Note: If your selected iCloud backup includes purchases from the App Store that were made with a different Apple Account, you will be prompted to sign in with the corresponding Apple Account.

    You can choose Skip This Step if you would like. If you do this, the associated purchases will not be restored on your new iPhone.

  23. After signing in or skipping the step, the Restore from iCloud will begin.

    An estimated time remaining will appear on the screen.

    Note: If a Software Update is required for your phone, this will occur prior to the Restore from iCloud screen.

  24. Once the restore has been completed, your apps and data will continue downloading in the background.

    Note: Ensure you stay connected to Wi-Fi to allow for this to occur. If off Wi-Fi, the phone will use your mobile data.

  25. Press Continue on the Restore Completed page.

  26. You will then be prompted to enroll your phone in Remote Management. Click Next.

  27. On the Microsoft sign in page, sign in with your UFV email address and password.

  28. Next, you'll see a page indicating 'Configuring iPhone - Getting Configuration from "University of the Fraser Valley."' Please wait while this process completes.

  29. Progress through the next screens you may see and setup as you'd like:

    FaceID - Click Continue or Set Up Later.

    Screen Time - Click Continue or Set Up Later in Settings.

    Light or Dark Display - Select Light, Dark, or Auto and click Continue.

    Siri - Click Continue or Set Up Later in Settings.

  30. On the Welcome to iPhone screen, swipe up to get started.

  31. When prompted, enter your password for Exchange (your UFV email password).

  32. When prompted, set a passcode for the device.

  33. Insert your SIM card into the new phone. Use the provided SIM tray removal tool that comes in your phone information pocket in the iPhone box. Alternatively, a paperclip can be used.

    Mobile phone

  34. After inserting your SIM card, make a test phone call to ensure your phone has service. 

    You are ready to begin using your new phone.
