Care of UFV-Issued Laptops

Know your laptop care responsibilities

As a UFV employee, once IT Services allocates you a UFV-issued laptop, you are individually responsible for its safekeeping and proper use.

Read UFV Policy #14 to learn about Appropriate Use of Information Technology Resources.

Laptop warranty

UFV-issued laptops have a three-year manufacturer’s warranty with the exception of a one-year warranty for batteries.

If your laptop is malfunctioning, promptly submit a service ticket to IT Service Desk to arrange for repair while its still under warranty.

If you accidentally damage your laptop (i.e. by drop it or spill liquid on it), IT Services will coordinate the non-warranty repairs, but your department may be responsible for the repair costs.

Laptop care guidelines

Follow these guidelines to keep your UFV-issued laptop in good condition throughout its life cycle:

Protect your laptop

Never leave your laptop unattended.

Most incidents of theft occur when laptops are left in vehicles.

Avoid leaving your laptop in a vehicle, especially overnight or in plain sight.

Prevent others from using your laptop to ensure it remains secure and free from unauthorized access.

Do not personalize the case

UFV-issued laptops are UFV property.

Do not personalize your UFV-issued laptop with stickers or other adhesives as this may hinder hardware servicing or replacement.

Clean the laptop regularly

Clean the screen and keyboard regularly using a soft, dry cloth.

Ensure the laptop is clean inside and out when returning it to IT Services for servicing or at the end of its life cycle.

Maintain the battery

Keep the battery cool and, when possible, use the charger rather than relying on battery power.

Continuous use of battery power shortens its lifespan.

 Prevent physical damage

Avoid eating or drinking near your laptop.

Use an appropriate carrying case when transporting your laptop.

Avoid unauthorized modifications

Do not modify or repair your laptop yourself.

Only UFV IT Services or approved vendors are authorized to perform repairs or hardware changes.
