Security Tips

  • Check your app permissions for anything strange. For example, does that flashlight app need your location?
    • It is very common for apps to request access to more data than strictly required. For example, a calculator app shouldn't need access to your microphone.
    • On iOS - go to Settings > Privacy
    • On Android - go to Settings > Privacy > Permission Manager
  • Are sensitive notifications visible on your lock screen?
  • Be careful when installing new apps. Not all apps on the App Store or Play Store are safe.
  • Do you use that app? If not, uninstall it!
    • The more apps you have, the more windows into your data and potential security risks there are. As a bonus, it frees up space.
  • Use an authenticator app to protect your accounts.
  • Enable automatic updates for the latest security patches.
    • On iOS - go to Settings >> App Store > App Updates
    • On Android - go to Play Store > click your profile image > Settings > Network Preferences > Auto-update Apps
  • Always require a password or biometrics to unlock your device, such as a fingerprint or FaceID. What would a stranger have access to if they could get into your device?
  • Enable Find my Device. This allows you to remotely disable, and locate, your device if it is lost or stolen.
    • On iOS - go to Settings > [your name] > Find My
    • On Android - go to Settings > Security > Find My Device
