Register a passkey in Microsoft Authenticator

Microsoft Authenticator can store a passkey that you can use to sign in to your UFV account. Once registered, you can use your phone's screen lock, such as your fingerprint, face recognition, or PIN, to approve sign-ins without entering your password or using a separate MFA code.

Before you begin

You will need:

  • A mobile device with the Microsoft Authenticator app installed
  • Access to your UFV account

Make sure Microsoft Authenticator is installed and up to date before starting.

Register your passkey

  1. Go to: https://aka.ms/mfasetup. Sign in with your UFV account if prompted.
  2. Add a new sign-in method:
    1. Select Add sign-in method
    2. Select Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator
  3. Follow the prompts to register the passkey:
    1. Open your Microsoft Authenticator app
    2. Select your UFV account
    3. Select Create a passkey
    4. Follow the instructions in the app to complete registration
  4. If prompted, verify your passkey using your device's security method (e.g. fingerprint, PIN)
  5. Give the passkey a recognizable name (e.g. "my iPhone")

Use your passkey

After registering the passkey, you may see Passkey as a sign-in option when accessing UFV services.

On the sign-in screen, select Sign-in options or Other ways to sign in if the passkey option is not immediately displayed. Choose Passkey and follow the instructions.

Your phone may ask you to open Microsoft Authenticator or confirm the sign-in using your fingerprint, face, or PIN. Once verification is complete, you will be signed in.

Frequently asked questions

Does Microsoft Authenticator see my fingerprint or face?

No. Your biometric information is handled by your device. Microsoft Authenticator does not store or send your fingerprint or facial information outside of your device. 

Do I still need my UFV password?

Yes. Keep your password secure even if you normally use a passkey to sign in. Your password and other sign-in methods may still be needed in certain situations, such as when signing into computers on campus.

Can I have more than one passkey?

Yes. You can register passkeys on multiple devices or security keys. Having more than one sign-in method can be useful if you lose access to one device.
