ADFS Applications and Blackboard Single Sign On Errors

Several UFV provided applications use Active Directory Federated Services (ADFS) single sign on. When using multiple applications or due to an expired session, you may receive error messages when signing into ADFS applications. This article provides information on how to signi in and sign out ADFS applications, error message received and how to resolve and prevent it.

 

ADFS Applications Login

Several UFV provided applications use Active Directory Federated Services (ADFS) single sign on.

  • EMPLOYEES - Employees have two set of UFV credentials to sign in to the applications using appropriate ADFS sign in shown in the table below.
  • STUDENTS - Students can login to ADFS applications using their Student ID and myUFV password as shown in below table.

Blackboard Authentication Expired SSO Error

  • When signing into Blackboard, students or employees may recieve an authentication expired error message as shown below. The error prevents logging into the Blackboard system, even when clicking on “Return to Login Page” or attempting to sign in again, the error reappears. How to Resolve SSO or Blackboard Authentication Expired SSO Error?
 

FOR EMPLOYEESIf you are logging into Blackboard and any other ADFS application simultaneously, you will see one of the above errors. You can only login to one application in your browser at this time.  Please make sure any above ADFS applications are closed in your browser and follow steps shown below.


IF YOU SEE A SSO LOGIN ERROR, you must open the following URL to log you out of any current application.

Please BOOKMARK URL - https://ufvfim.ufv.ca/adfs/ls/?wa=wsignout1.0 for future reference

  • Once you see "Sign Out - You have successfully signed out", close the browser window.  
  • You should now be able log into your application.

 

How to prevent SSO or Blackboard Authentication Expired Error?

To prevent SSO or Blackboard Authentication Expired errors from occurring in the future, it is essential that you always log out and click "End SSO session" when you are finished using Blackboard as shown below.
To logout,

  • Click the logout button in the upper right corner of Blackboard.
  • One the next screen, click the “End SSO Session” button.
  • Do not leave Blackboard logged in on your computer when you are not using it.

 

Njoyn Login Error

You may receive different error messages when logging into Njoyn ADFS application. Listed below is common Njoyn Login error with resolution:

 

Error: ProcessSamlSsoResponse.......SAML Response missing assertion....

If you are receiving following error message when logging into Njoyn, follow the steps shown below to resolve the error:

Employees can log in to Njoyn ADFS application using only UFV email address or AD username e.g. joed

Reason

  • This error comes up when the employee attempts to log in to Njoyn ADFS using employee ID.

Resolution:

  • Please make sure any above ADFS applications listed in table are closed in your browser and follow steps shown below:
  • Click on the ADFS sign out link here.
  • Once you see "Sign Out - You have successfully signed out", close the browser window.  
  • You should now be able log into your application.
  • If the issue is not resolved, Contact IT Service Desk here and provide the screenshot of the error message received.
