Using Your Laptop Docking Station

Docking Station Overview

The docking station allows laptop users to place their laptop into the dock for charging, and connect to the UFV LAN network, while also allowing access to peripheral devices such as the monitor, keyboard and mouse.

 

Using your Laptop Docking Station

IT Services will have set up the docking station for you and configured your laptop's power and screen display settings for optimal usage with the dock.

To Dock your Laptop

If you turn the laptop over you will see the receptacles on the bottom of the laptop and where they are to line up with the mounts on the docking station.

  1. Place the turned-off laptop into the docking station ensuring the Mounts from the dock and receptacles on the laptop line up (as in the image below). The laptop should not move or slide if properly mounted.Back of laptop and docking station
  2. Slide the Lock Slider Button to the left. When it is successfully locked the button will light up.Lock Slider Button on the docking station
  3. Press the Dock Power Button. The button will light up if it is powering successfully. It may take a moment for the image to begin displaying on the monitor connected to the dock while the laptop powers on.Power button on the docking station
  4. Using the keyboard and mouse connected to the dock, login to the laptop and the UFV LAN network. Computer setup with monitor, keyboard, mouse, laptop and docking station
  5. To undock the laptop to continue use remotely on Campus:
    • Slide the Lock Slider Button to the right. Lock Slider Button on the docking station
    • Lift the laptop from the dock
    • Connect to Eduroam or UFV-Secure wireless networks to access network files and email through gateway.ufv.ca
  6. To Power off and remove the laptop from the dock to transport:
    • Push the Dock Power Button. This should initiate the shutdown process on the Windows 7 laptop.
    • Alternatively, you can select Shut down in Windows 7 or open the laptop lid and press the laptop power button.
    • Once powered off slide the Lock Slider Button to the right
    • Lift the laptop from the dock

 

Important Items to Note Regarding Using the Docking Station

  • If laptop power settings have been adjusted on your laptop and it goes into sleep mode while in the dock, you need to press the Dock Power Button, or open the laptop lid and press the power button on the laptop to wake it.
  • If you would like to use the laptop display as a secondary monitor to either duplicate the display or extend it, you can open the lid on the laptop while docked and adjust the display settings in Windows 7.
    • In Windows 7 right-click anywhere on the desktop and select Screen Resolution.
    • Under Multiple Displays select to either Duplicate these displays or Extend these displays (based on preference).
    • If using an extended display; under Change the appearance of your displays, drag and drop the screens to your preferred orientation (Screen 1 or 2 as pictured below).

  • If you log in to the UFV LAN network while the laptop is docked and wish to undock the laptop, you will lose your mapped network drives and access to email via Outlook client. Once undocked you will need to connect to either Eduroam or UFV-Secure wireless networks, and access your network and email through gateway.ufv.ca.
  • If you undock and then re-dock, once docked again you will need to logoff and log back into the UFV LAN network for the network drives to remap and use Outlook.
  • All cables i.e. Power adapter, network etc. should remain stationary and connected to the dock.
